A Latina Girlfriend May Have Been Good for Don Draper

As a passionate advertising strategic planner and a Mad Men fanática, it saddened me to see there were never any real Latino characters developed on the show. I understand that in the 1960’s diversity and multiculturalism in advertising agencies wasn’t as prominent as it is today. This got me thinking, what if Don had worked in a multicultural environment and ended up in a relationship with a Latina, like Sofia Vergara?

I would have loved to see that! The relationship probably wouldn’t have lasted long but it would have been filled with excitement, passion and certainly fun to watch. By dating a Latina woman, here are five things Don would have had to fare with:

1. By dating her, he would have been dating her entire family too – here and overseas. And when I say her family I’m including her tios, tias, grandparents, cousins, nephews, and close friends.

2. Every weekend he would have had a different celebration to attend with her – anniversaries, baptisms, quinceañearas, communions, birthdays, graduations, national soccer games and so on and so on.

3. Forget dinner and a movie, she would have made him loosen up those hips by dragging him to dance salsa, bachata, cumbia or merengue all night long.

4. He would have had to learn some Spanish quickly. “Uyyy qué rico. Claro que quiero más por favor. ¿Otra cerveza? Por supuesto.” With that alone, he would have made a great impression on her family.

5.  She would have taken him to her country of origin to visit with the rest of her family and get a taste of her home.

She would have been intense and passionate and loud and dramatic. By her side there never would have been a dull moment for Don and it might have made him forget his own woes.

Looking back, a Latina girlfriend might have been exactly what Don needed in his life. Someone to snap him out of his misery and instead share all of life’s greatest joys – passion, love, family, celebrations, food, travel, laughter, and plenty of good times…
